A Stern Design Effort Is A Long Design Effort
Oh my stars, bet nobody saw an update to this coming!
A Stern Chase has long sat on the backburner as something that needed more work to be as good as I wanted it to be, and with there being another Breathless Jam going on now was as good a time as any. So, what changed, what still needs to be done, and what is getting spun off?
- The local equivalent of the Stunt mechanic from the base Breathless SRD has been created. Gambits are for when a ship leaves standard protocols, tactics, and notions behind, allowing the ship to roll a d12 on its next check instead of a Department rating. The Supply mechanic can further boost this, allowing for 2d12 to be rolled. A ship can only attempt one Gambit before needing to Rest, Repair, and Refit.
- The array for a ship's Departments is now 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10, and 1d10, to leave the d12 as a unique die for Gambits.
- Enemy Presence no longer increases the Difficulty Rating of checks. Things were hard enough.
- There's some cover art by Misael “Gio” Manning! All hail the creator of excellent sci-fi stock art!
So, what are some things I still feel like I need to do before this game is finale.pdf finished?
- A few additional sample missions (hey, by the way, Azukail went and made some of their own!)
- Some extra language about mission and campaign design, and advice for FLEETCOM.
What I'm not going to be doing is including a full example campaign. That sort of thing, instead, is going to be spun off into a series of Stern Chase settings and campaign seeds. That's right, this game is going to have a line!
I've got 16 days and a bit of change from posting this update left in that Breathless Jam 2, so that's my deadline to complete the above bullet points and at least have one jam-level campaign/setting published, so keep an eye out (and let me know what you think of the base game, whether you're returning or are taking your first real look!
